Welcome |
Welcome to the Blues Moves project. Launched in 2015, our goal is to record and document vernacular blues dance movements as best understood by the national blues dance community. We wish to stay as true as possible to the rich tradition and history of blues vernacular dance while being open to new innovations and styles that come from the wealth of knowledge and experience possessed by top modern blues dancers.

Who We Are |
Blues Moves is curated by Jennifer Sowden of New York City and Paul Mandel of San Francisco.
Jenny Sowden is an award winning, full-time, international dance instructor based in New York City where she is the managing director of Brooklyn Swings and nycBABBLE.com. Jenny has been training in dance for over twenty years and teaching for over fifteen, with a BA in Dance and Theater from San Diego State University. She has studied 34 different styles of movement including Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop, West African, Capoeira, Aikido, Tango, Salsa, Lindy hop, Balboa, and Blues. Her background influences her teaching and general style through musicality, variety, expression and an understanding of body mechanics. Jenny believes the dance floor is a ‘World of Yes,’ where by constantly accepting and being inspired by what happens, creates an amazing place to be. We then take classes in a ‘World of Intention’ to expand our ‘World of Yes.’ Find out more at JennySowden.com. Paul took his first swing dance lesson in 2005. After learning to lindy hop in college, he was dragged to a blues house party in 2006 and has been hooked ever since. More than anything, Paul loves establishing a crystal-clear connection with his partner and discovering their unique blend of musicality together. Since 2010, Paul has been teaching blues around the US and internationally. His focus as a teacher is in challenging students to take charge of their own learning while holding onto the soul and joy of their dancing. Paul is also the Vice President and Curriculum Developer for Sundown Blues in San Francisco. |
